It seems unusual that Winter is our favourite time of year in Casuarina NSW…  But it is!  Warm sunny days, cool nights and plenty of opportunities to take advantage of the quiet times around us (less people and traffic).

I was thinking today of the favourite walks I like to do from La Petit Unite – and here are two that I would recommend.  You don’t need a car either!

Walk 1: Casuarina to Salt Village

If you head straight to the beachfront coastal walk path, turn left (north!) and in about 30 minutes you will reach the iconic Salt Village.  Alternatively, you can head straight to the beach and walk along the beach to the lifeguard tower at Salt SLSC and make your way up the beach path to the village.

At Salt Village, you can grab a coffee at Salt Bean Cafe, a delicious citrus tart from the French Pattisserie or (and this is my pick for lunch) a classic Aussie Burger from Salt Village Fish and Chips.

If shopping is your thing, I love Meraki Blu for a mix of fashion and homewares (found many design pieces for La Petit Unite here), and of course there is Witchery and Seafolly too.  Plenty of restaurants along the restaurant strip – Mahsuri Thai, Fins, Darbaar, La Barrita and Sea Salt are clustered together while at the other end there is of course the Salt Bar and Bistro.  In between you will find the Mini Mart and Salt Cellars.

Close by you will find the Spa at Salt and on the Mantra side is Soul and Ice Jewellery, Exhale at Salt and Vision Pilates.

Walking back to La Petit Unite, you can stop off for a cheeky wine and nibble at the Ocean Avenue Wine Bar (pop next door to Black Sheep Bottle Shop for take homes) or for something more substantial the pizzas and pasta at Al Chiosco.  For dessert, I would recommend the gelato (yes, even in winter!) at Al Chiosco.

..and of course its an easy cycle to Salt – with the benefit that just 10 mins further on you can sample the delights of the beautiful coastal seaside town of Kingscliff.

Walk 2:  Casuarina to Cabarita Beach

Again head to the coastal walk (or the beach) and head south.  Don’t be surprised if you don’t see many people on your walk.  Likely it will be all locals – and don’t forget to smile. We are a friendly bunch here and like to acknowledge each other!

Once you get to Cabarita Beach – you have a choice – head to the rocks and up the stairs and continue your walk to Norries Headland.  From here you can do a spot of whale watching (the season has just started) and thrill in the delights of the frolicking of these beautiful creatures as part of their annual migration.

Heading back into Cabarita there are a plethora of local shops and cafes.  Nectar is great for breakfast, coffee or a juice as is Caba Social.   My favourite for coffee is the Fuel Bakehouse.  I find the best cakes and bread at the Cabarita Bakehouse and for something more substantial (in the evenings) No 35. Kitchen and Bar is well known for its happy hour (5-6pm) and their salumi plate is a major hit.  Thai InFa (has a sister restaurant Betel in Pottsville) is well known for its beautiful cuisine and Burrow Pizza has a great selection for all tastes.  The Stunned Mullet is awesome for fish and chips (and yes – we did see Ant and Dec – UK celebrities there a couple of years ago when they were in town for the filming of “I’m a celebrity”…).  For another quick drink you have plenty of options from the bar at Halcyon House (I love a cheeky Aperol Spritz here), the Cabarita Beach SLSC (sea views) and of course the neighbouring Cabarita Beach Bar.

When walking to Cabarita I tend to walk one way along the beach and then back via the boardwalk.  Cycling along the boardwalk to Cabarita Beach is also an option and that will take your time down to about 20 mins (and no hills!).

The above suggestions are not everything that is available at Salt Village, Ocean Avenue or Cabarita Beach – but the ones that I have personally been to..

So, hope this inspires you to enjoy a walk along the beach (north or south) when you visit us in the beautiful seaside town that is Casuarina.
